Steel explorer

Compare knife steels on five properties, then read what each element in the steel does. Scores run from 0 to 5.

What the five properties mean

No steel scores 5 on everything. Gaining on one property usually costs another.

What each element does

Steel is iron with other elements added in small amounts. Each one changes how the blade behaves. Amounts are percent of weight and approximate. Click a steel to jump to it.

Composition figures are typical values from maker datasheets and knife steel references, rounded. Real batches vary. I list HRC (hardness on the Rockwell C scale) only on the product pages, where I have confirmed it.
